Elections
School board elections are held every four years in Ontario, at the same time as municipal elections. The most recent school board elections were held on October 27, 2014, and the next school board elections will take place in 2018.
School board trustees
The election of school board trustees is governed by the Education Act and the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.
School board trustees:
- Are school board members;
- Are local officials, elected for four years, by members of the public during school board elections;
- Are advocates for the community on education issues;

School board trustees must:
- Ensure the success and well-being of every student;
- Help to make decisions that benefit the entire board, while representing the interests of the people who elected them;
- Communicate the school board’s points of view and decisions to their electorate.
